Revit 2015 Content

Revit 2015 Content

In this click saver I want to talk about Revit 2015 family/template content. Some have been experiencing an issue where their content is not being installed correctly. First we must understand that during the installation of Revit 2015 it has to separately download the family content because it is not part of the original installation package. If you notice that the family content did not get installed you can add or remove Revit family content using the Add or Remove Features utility. To add content, you must be connected to the Internet so the installer can download the desired content from the Autodesk site.

To add or remove content:

  1. On the Windows Control Panel -> Programs and Features
  2. Select Autodesk Revit Content Libraries for the relevant release, and click Uninstall/Change.
  3. On the installation page, click Add or Remove Features.
  4. On the Add or Remove content page, select the content to add or deselect the content you wish to remove.
  5. Click Next to update your Revit installation.
  • When you use the Add or Remove Features utility for Revit, the following paths may update in UserDataCache\Revit.ini:
  • FamilyTemplatePath
  • DataLibraryLocations
  • DefaultTemplate

The next time Revit starts, it copies those paths from UserDataCache\Revit.ini to the user profile version of Revit.ini.

But what if that doesn’t work?

In scenarios where the installation completes successfully but no content is created,  the content download has typically failed. I would recommend the following steps:

  1. Access the Windows Control Panel and go to Programs and Features.
  2. Select the Autodesk Revit Content Libraries 2015 entry and click Uninstall/Change.
  3. At the main Revit Content Libraries 2015 maintenance page, click Add or Remove Programs.
  4. At the Add or Remove Content page, disable the checkboxes for each content pack, then click Next.
  5. When the updating process is complete, click Finish.
  6. Repeat steps 1 through 3.
  7. At the Add or Remove Content page, enable the checkboxes for each content pack that you want to install, then click Next.
  8. When the updating process is complete, click Finish.

The key is to remove all content before attempting to re-install it. This is necessary because it is currently in a state where Revit is incorrectly under the impression that content installed properly. Steps 1 through 5 get you back to a state where Revit is aware that no content is installed and subsequent attempts to add content should be successful.

Please note that you must have an active internet connection when running through these steps because some Revit content may need to be downloaded during this process. I also recommend disabling any anti-virus software during this process to ensure that it does not block the download of Revit content.

See you in class or at your office, Jarod
